Area development WTC and new Cambuur stadium
Everything comes together at the Elfstedenpark – sports, learning, education and work. There are shops, supermarkets, a bowling centre, a McDonald’s, a Firda school and the new Kooi Stadion where SC Cambuur plays. The surrounding area has been redesigned, and its redevelopment is now complete. The Elfstedenpark is ready for the future.
Area design
The design for the area (opens in new tab) was worked on together with local residents.
What preceded that?
From September 2017, the City of Leeuwarden collaborated with residents from the WTC area and other stakeholders. Together, they formed a working group. They drew up a plan that took the concerns and ideas at play in the area into account. The goal was to create an area that better matched the needs of the community.
In the urban development plan, the local authority showed what the area around the WTC would come to look like. In July 2018, the city council adopted a new proposal, at the developer’s request. This proposal deviated from the previous plans on several points. On 23 January 2019, the city council definitively approved the urban development plan. Afterwards, the working group continued to work on the environmental plan and the layout plan.
