Subsidy for national listed buildings

Residence grant

Do you own a national monument with a residential function? And have you been working on your home in the past year? Every year, you can apply for a housing subsidy. This can be done between 1 March and 30 April.

Maintenance grant

Do you own a national listed building without a residential function? This could be a church, office or factory. If so, apply for the maintenance grant. This grant is intended to keep the national listed building presentable and is paid over a period of 6 years.

More information and how to apply for these grants is provided on the website of the Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE).

Incentive scheme for listed buildings

The province of Friesland adopts this scheme every year. The provincial authority provides grants for national listed buildings, local listed buildings and distinctive buildings (not homes).

More information and how to apply for this grant can be found on the website of the Province of Friesland.

Loans for historic buildings and monuments

Cultuurfonds mortgage

Apply for the Cultuurfonds (culture fund) mortgage to restore your property. This can also be combined with re-zoning and conservation. The maximum loan amount is € 200,000.
The Cultuurfonds mortgage is a low-interest loan. This loan is for ‘non-residential listed buildings’:

  • Local listed buildings.
  • Distinctive buildings designated as such in an environment plan.
  • Visually prominent buildings in listed town or village conservation areas.
  • A property listed by the government.

Interest rates are 4.5% below market rates with a minimum of 1.5%. You can borrow a maximum of € 200,000.

More information on the Cultuurfonds mortgage can be found on the Restoration Fund website.

Leeuwarden Restoration Fund mortgage

Apply for the Leeuwarden Restoration Fund mortgage for restoration costs. This is possible if you are the owner of a local listed building or a designated visually prominent building. The local authority determines the amount of the loan. They base this on the eligible costs. Interest rates are 5% below market rates with a minimum of 1.5%.

You will find more information in the document Leeuwarder Restauratiefonds (PDF, 651.55 KB) or the website of the Restauratiefonds.

Conserving listed buildings

On the website De Groene menukaart you will find information on what is possible, what financial aid you can apply for and whether there are any rules to consider.

Zadelfonds grant scheme

Are you planning a one-off small-scale project in the field of heritage (conservation, archaeology, cultural landscape)? An example of a one-off small-scale project is:

  • An activity such as a publication.
  • An exhibition.
  • Repair of a fence or a facade stone, to which no regular subsidy schemes apply.

You may be able to apply for a local authority grant contribution from the Zadelfonds Fund.

How does it work?

  • An application must be submitted no later than 4 weeks before the activity is due to be carried out.
  • The application is submitted (if applicable) with photographic and other documentation material.
  • The application must be accompanied by a detailed explanation and an itemised budget of the costs.
  • The grant amount does not exceed 50% of the eligible costs up to the established grant cap.

The Zadelfonds grant scheme is drawn from the interest earnings of the estate of the Zadel family and must benefit local heritage conservation in the broadest sense.
