Sports facility
Is participating in a sport due to a disability difficult for you? There are several solutions. Perhaps this can be achieved with an aid or adaptation. We call that a sports facility.
Sports facilities
Applying for an aid or adaptation through your health insurance
The basic insurance reimburses a device that replaces a body part or supports the body. For example, a prosthesis, orthosis, walking frame or balance bike.
Apply to your own health insurer.
Borrowing an aid from a lending service
Want to try out a new sport? If so, you can temporarily borrow a sports aid. You can do so through the loan service via Uniek Sporten Uitleen. The local authority subsidises this organisation. For more information, visit the Uniek Sporten (opens in new tab) website.
Applying for a sports facility under the Social Support Act (Wmo)
Would you like to play sports with others at an association or club? If so, you may be eligible for money for a sports facility under the Wmo. You will receive a maximum of €8,400 for a period of 7 years. You can use this to buy a sports device or adaptation to participate in one sport of your choice. For example, a sports wheelchair, runners blades, a (fixed frame) handbike, a sports orthosis or a sports prosthesis. Contact the City of Leeuwarden to discuss this.
How do I submit an application?
Submit your application online (opens in new tab) (you will need DigiD). Are you unwilling or unable to apply online? Download and complete the Wmo Application Form (opens in new tab) and fill in. Send the form to the City of Leeuwarden. You can also hand it in at the Town Hall.
What happens next?
- A local authority employee will call you within 6 weeks of your application.
- A telephone interview or home visit will follow to discuss your situation.
- You will look for a suitable solution together.
- You will be informed within 2 weeks of the interview whether you are eligible for a sports facility.
- If there are many applications, this may take longer. We will inform you of this.
Support under the Social Support Act (Wmo) costs money
The local authority pays a large part of the costs. Some of the costs you pay yourself. We call this a personal contribution towards the costs.
Transport to training sessions and matches
Sports people with severe physical disabilities who cannot travel independently by public transport are eligible for transport through Special Heroes Netherlands. More information can be found on the Special Heroes Foundation (opens in new tab) website.
