Redevelopment of Harlingerstraatweg intersection
We are going to improve the intersection of Harlingerstraatweg, Engelsestraat and Nachtegaalstraat. The intersection will be made safer and ensure a better flow of traffic.
Why are we doing this?
In 2022, the local authority investigated which intersections in Leeuwarden are unsafe. The intersection of Harlingerstraatweg, Engelsestraat and Nachtegaalstraat was ranked as 1 of the 10 most dangerous locations.
Activities
We have been working on different designs for the intersection since the summer of 2025. We have talked to residents and have included their ideas and concerns in the plans.
In October 2025, we organised a meeting where we presented four designs. Residents had the opportunity to view the Traffic and Design Plans (VOP) and share their opinions.
The four designs are:
- VOP Harlingerstraatweg 100 C01-01 (opens in new tab)
- VOP Harlingerstraatweg 101 C01-01 (opens in new tab)
- VOP Harlingerstraatweg 102 C01-01 (opens in new tab)
- VOP Harlingerstraatweg 103 C01-01 (opens in new tab)

Working out the design for the mini-roundabout
In March 2026, we made a choice for the new crossroads. We will work out the plan for a mini-roundabout in more detail. During the meeting, many residents considered this the best solution.
Over the coming period, our traffic experts will draft an initial design. Once this is ready, we will inform the neighbourhood. We will adopt the definitive design in the summer of 2026.
Planning
- Spring 2026: working out the design for a mini-roundabout.
- Spring 2026: preliminary design for the mini-roundabout ready, informing the neighbourhood.
- Summer 2026: adopting the definitive design.
- Early 2027: start of construction work.
Stay informed
We will keep residents and stakeholders up to date by means of newsletters and advertisements. Paper copies of the newsletters will be distributed in the neighbourhood. Residents who left their email address at the meeting will receive a personal response. The questions and answers will be placed on this page in anonymised format.
