Asbestos
You are not permitted to remove asbestos yourself. You need the local authority’s permission for this. Asbestos is a hazardous substance. When it breaks, carcinogenic fibres are released. Report asbestos to the Environment Desk.
Reporting asbestos
Submit a report to the Environment Desk (Opens in new tab) at least 5 days in advance:
- Go to the section: Apply.
- Under activities, search for: Demolition.
- Select the form Demolition of a structure or part thereof or asbestos removal – Notification (Central Government).
Make sure that no privacy-sensitive data is included in the attachments. For example, your name, address or citizen service number.
Confirmation of receipt
You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt of this report, which you will hand in at the Milieustraat (recycling centre).
Reporting asbestos-containing material
Asbestos-like material looks very similar to asbestos, but you cannot see this. Would you like to take it to the Milieustraat (recycling centre)? Let us know online (Opens in new tab) (you will need DigiD). You should also add proof that the material does not contain asbestos.
Are you unwilling or unable to file a report online?
Download and complete the Acceptance form for asbestos-like material (Opens in new tab). Also send proof that the material does not contain asbestos. Send it to the City of Leeuwarden. You can also hand it in at the Town Hall.
How to remove asbestos
You may only remove asbestos yourself in your own home, garden and shed if:
- It consists of screwed-down whole sheets, in which the asbestos fibres are trapped.
- The plate area is a maximum of 35 m2.
- It is a non -glued asbestos-containing floor covering.
- The items are asbestos-containing floor tiles.
- The items are not roof tiles.
In all cases other than those mentioned above, you must have asbestos removed by a certified asbestos removal company (Opens in new tab).
How to store asbestos
Deliver it within 2 weeks to the Milieustraat. How to package and deliver it safely is explained on the Omrin (Opens in new tab)website. Before bringing it to the Milieustraat:
- store it in a locked room so that others cannot come into contact with the asbestos;
- keep it separate from all other waste.
Charges
- Reporting the presence of asbestos is free of charge.
- You will be charged a fee for the asbestos report if one is required.
