Honorary citizenship

Honorary citizenship is conferred on someone who has made an outstanding contribution to Leeuwarden’s policies. Or for someone who has meant a lot to Leeuwarden’s national or international reputation. Honorary citizenship comes with a medal and a certificate. The certificate contains the details of the distinguished person and the reason why he or she received the award.

  • Mr J.S. Brandsma, former mayor of the City of Leeuwarden.
  • Mr G.J. te Loo, former mayor of the City of Leeuwarden.
  • Mr H. ten Hoeve, former councillor and ‘treasurer’ of Leeuwarden’s cultural-historical heritage.
  • Mr F.J.M. Crone, former mayor of the City of Leeuwarden.

Medal of Merit

The Medal of Merit is for people who have done something exceptional for the City of Leeuwarden in the fields of promotion, culture, science, economy or society. The Medal of Merit includes a medal and a certificate. The certificate contains the details of the distinguished person and the reason why he or she received the award. The Medal of Merit list includes those who were awarded the Medal of Merit until 1990.

Sports medal

The sports medal is awarded to people, institutions or associations from Leeuwarden for their special sports achievements. The sports medal consists of a silver medal and a certificate. The certificate contains the recipient’s details and the reason that this person or organisation is receiving the award. The Sports Medal list lists the people and organisations who were awarded the sports medal.

The Leeuwarder Leeuwtje

The Leeuwarder Leeuwtje is for people or representatives of organisations who have made special efforts for Leeuwarden or Leeuwarden society. The Lion (Leeuwtje)is a gold pin. The Leeuwarder Leeuwtje list contains those who were awarded the Leeuwarder Leeuwtje.

HERO58

HERO58 is a distinction form the City of Leeuwarden for young people up to 27 years of age who volunteer for Leeuwarden or Leeuwarden society. With this distinction, Leeuwarden places young volunteers in the limelight. The distinction was presented for the first time by councillor Hilde Tjeerdema during the 2019 Volunteer Festival.
