What is the Environment Vision?

The Environment Vision is the plan for the future for everything you see around you: from living to traffic and from playing to entrepreneurship. The local authority uses the document as an aid in making good choices. After all, what should we do when the number of people who need a home exceeds the number of homes available? What if we need room for clean energy, but we also want more green spaces? In the Environment Vision, we set out how we will use the limited space available in the city, villages and the outlying area. Now and in the future.

Why a new vision?

Our current Environment Vision is several years old. Over time, the environment and our needs change, and new rules are added regularly. We are dealing with major issues such as housing construction, the climate, energy, nature and improving districts and villages.

The old vision is no longer a good match for these developments. That is why we are making a new Environment Vision: a plan for the future that addresses the challenges of today and also gives direction to the choices we will make leading up to 2050.

Want to have your say about your living environment?

We will not draw up this future vision while sitting idly behind our desks. Instead, we will be involving residents, entrepreneurs, organisations, experts, partners and directors.

We will do this by means of a survey. After that, we will enter into conversations about various topics. Everyone looks at the living environment in a different way, and all perspectives are valuable.

The planning

  • January: broad survey for all residents of Leeuwarden.
  • February to April: in conversation about the Environment Vision.
  • Autumn 2026: publication of the draft Environment Vision with room for reactions.

Early 2027: adoption of the new Environment Vision by the city council.
