Redevelopment of Harlingerstraatweg intersection
We are going to improve the Harlingerstraatweg–Engelsestraat–Nachtegaalstraat intersection. The intersection will be made safer and ensure a better flow of traffic.
Why are we doing this?
In 2022, the local authority investigated which intersections in Leeuwarden are unsafe. The Harlingerstraatweg–Engelsestraat–Nachtegaalstraat intersection was ranked among the 10 most dangerous locations. That is why we intend to make this intersection safer.
Design of the mini-roundabout
To improve safety at this intersection, a mini-roundabout will be introduced. Take a look at the preliminary design of this mini-roundabout (opens in new tab).
- The roundabout will slow down traffic, reducing the chances of an accident.
- Cyclists and pedestrians will also be able to cross more safely, and road users will have an easier time exiting from or onto side streets.
- A mini-roundabout is smaller than a regular roundabout. This allows delivery vans and trucks to partly drive over the middle in order to turn right or left.
- Cyclists and pedestrians will have right of way at the roundabout.
Execution
For the execution of the design, some bottlenecks involving cables and pipelines will need to be resolved first. For some old cables, we don’t know their exact location and depth. We will investigate this first. Based on the results of this investigation, we will be able to determine the necessary follow-up steps.
The grid manager will also move some cables and pipelines before we can start the work. Based on expectations, this will not happen before spring of 2028. Until then, we will continue to work on the design. Once this is ready, we will discuss the design with local residents and other relevant parties.
The process so far
In 2025, we drew up various designs for the intersection. We showcased 4 designs during a meeting, giving residents the opportunity to view the designs and share their opinions. We talked to them and took their ideas and concerns into account in the plans. During the meeting, we learned that many residents considered the mini-roundabout the best solution. We collected the 10 most frequently mentioned comments and points for attention of residents and listed them in the document Harlingerstraatweg walk-in evening findings.
Planning
- Autumn 2026: elaborating the definitive design.
- Spring 2027: definitive design, informing the local residents.
- Spring 2027: adopting the definitive design.
- Spring 2028: start of construction work.
Stay informed
We will keep residents and stakeholders up to date by means of letters, newsletters and advertisements.
