Future plan for De Schrans and Sixmaplein
De Schrans and Sixmaplein are important living, working and visiting locations. De Schrans is a crowded street for cyclists, especially because of new homes in the south of the city. Sixmaplein was mainly intended for cars. Together with residents, entrepreneurs and visitors, we are working on a plan for the future.
What is the reason for this plan?
As the city is growing in the south, De Schrans is seeing more and more cyclists. At the same time, there is considerable unnecessary car traffic. In the future, this may result in more crowded situations, as well as dangerous situations at intersections.
The pavements are also getting more crowded. Many bicycles are parked here, leaving less room for pedestrians.
The local authority aims to make De Schrans safer, calmer and more pleasant. That is why we are considering whether fully or partially closing the level crossing to cars might be a good idea. This would give cyclists and pedestrians more room and make this a more pleasant place to live or spend time.
First a future plan, with no implementation yet
Before taking any decisions, we will first draw up a future plan. We call this a development programme. This plan will help improve the area one step at a time. We will look into what already works well and what could be improved, together with residents, entrepreneurs and other parties. For example, we will look at traffic, greenery, living, working and how people travel through this area. The development programme is not yet a plan for implementation. It shows the direction we want to take in the future. The ideas and choices we decide on now will later be elaborated in real plans and projects.
Participating
There are several ways to contribute to the future plan. Several opportunities have already passed. After this, there will still be a meeting on the design plans up to this point, and you can still submit an official opinion with your views (see the schedule).
- Questionnaire (closed)
- People could use a questionnaire to indicate what they like about Schrans and Sixmaplein – and what could be improved. They could also share points for attention with the local authority. The questionnaire was available until Wednesday 12 November. More than 500 people completed the questionnaire.
- Working group assembled
- People could also use the questionnaire to apply for the working group. There were over 100 applications. From these applicants, 35 people were selected and invited to join the group. The people who were not selected were notified if they had left an email address. The local authority tried to put together a diverse group: young and old, residents, entrepreneurs and visitors.
- Walk-in meeting
- There was a walk-in meeting on Monday evening, 10 November. The meeting consisted of an information market and two brief presentations.
Preliminary planning schedule
- October–November 2025: questionnaire and walk-in meeting.
- November 2025–March 2026: drawing up a draft development programme (with input from the working group).
- Spring/summer 2026: walk-in meeting and development programme available for inspection – everyone can respond to it.
- Autumn 2026: decision-making by the City Executive and the municipal council.
Following the decision, the local authority will look into whether the level crossing at De Schrans can actually be closed to ongoing traffic. The plans for De Schrans and Sixmaplein will also be further elaborated. The local authority will also look at the future of Zuiderplein.
