Permit application

  • For a pitch to sell goods,, apply for a pitch permit online. Your stall or trailer must be mobile.
  • If you use the pitch to sell goods continuously for more than 30 days, you will need to apply for a pitch permit in combination with a temporary environmental permit. Your stall or trailer must be mobile.
  • No permit is required to give voice to thoughts or feelings in public. This is a constitutional right.

What to consider if you want to occupy a pitch on local authority land

  • No other sales pitch is possible within 200 metres of a specific pitch for selling goods. The special pitches are located at Lange Pijp, Beursplein and Prins Hendrikbrug.
  • Pitches are not permitted within 200 metres of schools.
  • Pitches are not permitted at the following locations:
    • Nieuwestad
    • Wilhelminaplein
    • Lombardplein
    • Gouverneursplein
    • Hofplein
    • The site on either side of De Harmonie
    • In the Prinsentuin and other parks
    • Around the Grote Kerk
    • The square in front of Burmania House at Nieuwestad

Special pitches for selling goods

Three special pitches for selling goods have been established in Leeuwarden. Different rules apply to the use of these places.

  • Behind De Beurs
  • Lange Pijp

How do I get permission to use a special pitch for selling goods?

A tendering procedure is held to assess eligibility for a special pitch to sell goods. Applications for this open about 4 months before the start of the usage period. Permission to use these sites is given for a maximum of 5 years, with a maximum of 1 usage period per year.

Usage periods are:

  • February to May
  • June to September
  • October to January

During the October to January usage period, only ‘oliebollen’ may be sold at these locations. The Lange Pijp is not available as a location from February to May. From June to September, only ice cream may be sold here.

What do I need?

  • Proof of registration at the Chamber of Commerce.
  • Valid proof of identity.
  • You are 18 years or above.
  • The company must have third-party liability insurance.

Goods markets

  • Waagplein: Monday afternoons and Saturdays
  • Waagplein and Nieuwestad Zuid Zijde: Saturdays
  • Prins Willem Alexanderplein: Wednesday mornings
  • Shopping centre Bilgaard: Wednesday afternoon
  • Wilhelminaplein antiques and curios market: Thursdays from mid-June to mid-September from 9 am to 4 pm
  • Wilhelminaplein: Fridays

There is no (goods) market on public holidays, King’s Day and Liberation Day.
During the funfair period or for any other major event, the goods market will be moved from Wilhelminaplein to Nieuwestad/Wirdumerdijk.
The Saturday market has as its fallback location Wirdumerdijk/Ruiterskwartier (up to Lombardplein) and/or Wilhelminaplein.

Since 1 January 2017, the Drachten-based Stichting Marktbeheer has been responsible for organising and managing all markets in Leeuwarden.

Pitch at the antiques and curios markets

You can report to the duty market manager in the morning. It is not possible to reserve a pitch. Entry with vehicles is possible from 6 am. Placements are arranged on arrival.
