Leeuwarden is looking for a new mayor
The search for a new mayor consists of 14 steps. We will explain how this works and keep you informed regarding which step we have reached. New information will be published on this page. We are currently at step 2.
1. Confidential committee
The city council will select a confidential committee. This committee will consist of members of the city council. The confidential committee:
- will help draw up the profile for the new mayor;
- will interview the candidates;
- will provide the final recommendation on who should be the new mayor.
2. Profile
The city council will draw up a profile for the new mayor, listing what the local authority considers important. For example, how should the mayor provide leadership, communicate and take decisions?
Residents had the opportunity to share what they considered important in a new mayor using a survey. The outcomes of the survey will be taken into account in drawing up the profile.
3. King’s Commissioner
The extra council meeting will be held on 2 November. You can follow the meeting live via the livestream (opens in new tab).
4. Vacancy
The Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations will announce the vacancy. This will happen on the advice of the King’s Commissioner. The job vacancy will be opened on 10 November.
5. Applying
Applicants will write letters. These letters will be sent to the King’s Commissioner.
6. The candidates
The King’s Commissioner will gather information about the applicants and interview them. He will also request information on their judicial pasts.
7. Selection
The King’s Commissioner will discuss the applicants with the confidential committee. He will share his thoughts about the candidates. Afterwards, the confidential committee will decide which candidates to interview.
8. Interviews
The confidential committee will hold interviews with all selected candidates.
9. Advice
The confidential committee will provide a recommendation to the city council. The committee will select two candidates it believes are fit for the position of mayor. The city council will discuss this recommendation.
10. Recommendation
The city council will make the final recommendation. This will contain the names of the two most suitable candidates. The candidate listed as number 1 will be the one the city council believes is most suitable for the position of mayor.
11. To the Minister
The recommendation with the King’s Commissioner’s advice will be sent to the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations.
12. Screening
The Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations will have the number-1 candidate screened. This means the candidate will be investigated. The General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) will investigate the candidate and look into their fiscal and financial data.
After this, the Minister will talk to the candidate. The Minister will also discuss the recommendation with the other ministers in the cabinet.
If everything is in order, the candidate will be recommended to the King. The King will officially appoint the new mayor by means of a royal decree.
13. Royal decree
The appointment will be made by royal decree and will be announced by means of a press release. This procedure will take around 8 months.
14. Swearing in
The inauguration of the new mayor will happen during a special council meeting. The King’s Commissioner will swear in the mayor in the presence of the city council.
