Future plan for De Schrans and Sixmaplein
De Schrans and Sixmaplein are important living, working and visiting locations. De Schrans is a crowded street for cyclists, especially because of new homes in the south of the city. Sixmaplein was mainly intended for cars. Together with residents, entrepreneurs and visitors, we are working on a plan for the future.
Responding to the elaborated scenarios online
We have used the results from the questionnaire, the walk-in meeting of November 2025 and the discussions with the working group to elaborate various scenarios. These scenarios set out how possible options will affect traffic and the layout of De Schrans and Sixmaplein. We also looked into what the economic consequences would be. We are curious to hear what opportunities and points for attention you have picked up on in relation to the scenarios.
What is the reason for this plan?
As the city is growing in the south, De Schrans is seeing more and more cyclists. At the same time, there is considerable unnecessary car traffic. This could result in more crowded roads and dangerous situations at crossroads and railway crossings. Pavements are also growing more crowded because of the bicycles parked there, leaving less room for pedestrians. The local authority aims to make De Schrans safer, calmer and more pleasant. We are looking for ways to better organise traffic, with more room for cyclists and pedestrians and less car traffic coming through.
This approach is in line with the Mobility Policy Framework 2040, which was approved by the city council in 2024. Residents of Leeuwarden have had the opportunity to contribute their ideas through questionnaires and meetings. De Schrans, Sixmaplein, the railway crossing and the railway station area are important elements in this plan.
First a future plan, with no implementation yet
Before taking any decisions, we will first draw up a future plan. We call this a development programme. This plan will help improve the area one step at a time. We will look into what already works well and what could be improved, together with residents, entrepreneurs and other parties. For example, we will look at traffic, greenery, living, working and how people travel through this area. The development programme is not yet a plan for implementation. It shows the direction we want to take in the future. The ideas and choices we decide on now will later be elaborated in real plans and projects.
What has already happened
There are several ways to contribute to the future plan. Several opportunities have already passed. There will be another meeting at a later date.
- Questionnaire (completed)
- People could use a questionnaire to indicate what they like about Schrans and Sixmaplein – and what could be improved. More than 500 people completed the questionnaire. We will use the results as a basis for the development programme.
- Working group (completed)
- People could also use the questionnaire to apply for the working group. There were over 100 applications. A group of around 35 people was selected from among the applicants: residents, entrepreneurs and visitors of several ages. This working group will work on the development programme together with the local authority and the agency. It has already come together 3 times.
- Walk-in meetings (completed)
- Walk-in meetings were held on Monday evening 10 November 2025 and Tuesday evening 14 April 2026. At the first walk-in meeting, visitors could go to the information market and had the opportunity to engage in discussions about traffic, public spaces, functions and atmosphere at themed tables. At the second walk-in meeting, they could view the results of the investigations and respond to the elaborated scenarios.
Next steps
The Antea Group/CB5 agency will continue preparing the draft development programme after the walk-in meeting on 14 April, also using the results from the online environment. This document will not yet include any choices between the different scenarios.
However, it will indicate which scenarios are most suitable based on traffic analyses, spatial effects and economic consequences.
After the draft development programme, the new Municipal Executive will make the draft development programme available for inspection over the course of 2026. Everyone will then have the opportunity to officially respond by submitting an opinion.
- 10 to 24 April 2026
Viewing and responding to scenarios online - Spring 2026
Further elaboration of the draft development programme - Summer 2026
Draft development programme available for inspection (opinion possible)
The local authority will respond to the opinions it receives in a response memorandum. The city council will subsequently discuss the development programme. The Municipal Executive will adopt the development programme.
After that, we will look into which plans to elaborate further and how they can be implemented step by step. For example, we would still like to look at Zuiderplein.
