About the project

Leeuwarden is participating in the WATSUPS project together with 3 other European cities. This project is subsidised by the European Union, via the European Urban Initiative (EUI). Mechelen (Belgium) is our main partner. There, we are being shown around and learning ways to make better use of water in the city.

How do we do this?

By making better use of water in public space, for example through area developments in Spoordok and the city centre. In this way, we will consider how water can help create a pleasant place to live and stay.

What does the project focus on?

On the following 3 topics:

  • Clean water
  • Accessible water
  • More beautiful water in the city

What will we use WATSUPS for?

Leeuwarden will use WATSUPS to collect knowledge from abroad, gain inspiration for Spoordok and the city centre and fund small trial projects.
