Submitting a residents’ initiative
Residents’ initiatives are ideas put forward by residents with the aim of improving their neighbourhood or district and making it a more pleasant and healthy place to live. They put these ideas into practice together and pay the costs. The local authority can help with advice.

Download the form Bewonersinitiatief (PDF, 148.68 KB). Send the form to the City of Leeuwarden. You can also hand it in at the Town Hall.
Examples of residents’ initiative
- Making a community allotment.
- Placing a picnic table.
- Planting more flowers and plants in each street.
- Creating a work of art with all residents.
- Picking up litter with local residents.
- Food festival: connecting cultures through food.
- District market: showing what is happening in the neighbourhood.
Conditions
- Make a plan that is also feasible. This must include, among other things, the following information:
- Description of the initiative.
- The initiative enjoys ample support in your neighbourhood.
- The location (map) for physical initiatives.
- Time line.
- The initiative must not conflict with the law or existing policy.
- The initiators are themselves responsible for any financing required.
- You can apply for grants for initiatives that improve the quality of life in your district, neighbourhood or village. Such as the Mienskipsfonds or 1 of the other grants. There are also national and provincial grants such as ‘Jantje Beton’.
