Royal distinction
You can nominate someone for a royal distinction (ribbon). Companies, organisations or associations can also receive a royal distinction.
Who is eligible for a distinction?
Residents
A resident of the City of Leeuwarden is eligible for a distinction if the person:
- Has committed to society selflessly for many years.
- Has done more than would normally be expected of someone.
Companies, foundations or associations
Companies, foundations and associations can also receive a Royal Distinction. Receiving such a distinction is a great honour. It shows that your organisation is important to society or the economy. There are different types of Royal Distinctions:
- The Royal designation is intended for large companies, associations, foundations or institutions that have been around for at least 100 years. They must enjoy a good reputation and be of societal importance. This distinction is usually presented by the King’s Commissioner, together with the mayor.
- The designation of Royal Warrant holder is intended for smaller and medium-sized companies that have likewise been around for at least 100 years. They must be well known in the region and must be reliable. This distinction is presented by the King’s Commissioner or by the mayor.
- The Royal Medal of Honour is intended for associations, foundations or institutions that do something special for society. It is often presented during anniversary celebrations. This distinction is presented by either the King’s Commissioner or the mayor, depending on the situation.
This usually involves a festive moment. For example, the distinction can be presented on King’s Day, during anniversary celebrations or at a special gathering. Applying and registering
When do you apply for a ribbon?
- Awarded during the King’s birthday honours list ceremony: no later than 1 June the previous year.
- Awarded during a special occasion: at the latest 6 months before that occasion.
To register a resident, company, organisation or institution for a royal distinction, fill in the online request form.
What happens after the nomination?
- The mayor, the King’s Commissioner and the Civil Orders Advisory Commission in The Hague will advise the minister on your proposal.
- The minister makes a decision.
- If the minister agrees, the King signs the nomination.
- The mayor will inform you of this royal decree.
When is the ceremony?
- During the annual honours list ceremony on the last working day before King’s Day.
- During a special occasion, such as a farewell or anniversary.
