The project

The goal of the project is get rid of nuisance caused by tourism in the city, and instead let the city benefit from tourism. The city must remain safe, liveable and pleasant for residents and attractive for visitors. To that end, the ReStart Compass was developed. This is a measurement system that indicates how tourism affects the environment and people in the city. This system is currently being tested in 8 trial areas in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany.

Approach

  • Developing and testing the ReStart Compass in 8 trial locations in Belgium, Germany, France and the Netherlands.
  • Tourism companies and local authorities are helping with the transition to tourism that benefits both people and the environment.
  • Training a minimum of 54 tourism organisations and local authorities in Belgium, Germany, Ireland, France and the Netherlands to use the ReStart Compass as well.
