Streets2030 helps the city prepare for floods and heatwaves
Streets2030 is a European project in which the local authority tries to better protect its cycling and walking routes from floods and heatwaves. It is important that residents are able to walk, cycle and use public transport safely and comfortably. Cycling paths and pavements must therefore be adapted to the changing climate.
The project
In Leeuwarden, Wirdumerdijk is used as a testing location for Streets2030. Together with the different partners of the project, we will look at how the street can be made more resistant to large amounts of rain and extreme heat. It is important to ensure enough space for cyclists and pedestrians. The local authority receives a grant from the Interreg North West Europe programme for this project.
Approach
- Developing a ‘Streets2030 Compass’. This compass will help local authorities to design cycling paths and pavements that are more resistant to heavy rain and extreme heat.
- Testing the Streets2030 Compass in 6 cities in Northwestern Europe.
- Providing training to other cities, on how to make and finance safe and strong walking and cycling paths.
Project partners
- City of Leeuwarden
- Cerema (Lead Partner)
- Nevers
- Galway City Council
- The city of Bremen
- POLIS
- Belgian Road Research Centre
- The city of Sint-Niklaas
Project period
January 2026 to June 2029.
Budget
€560,249.86.
Of which €336,149.92 from Interreg NWE (60%).
