Housebuilding on the site of the former primary school in Easterlittens
The former primary school in Easterlittens will make way for affordable housing. We are drawing up a plan for this in consultation with the villagers. The objective is to alleviate the housing shortage for first-time buyers, young people and the elderly. The City of Leeuwarden owns both the existing building and the grounds. We are currently investigating the scope for housebuilding, taking into account the villagers’ wishes.
Ideas of residents
During the Annual Gathering of the Village Community of Oosterlittens (November 2025), we talked to residents about ideas for residential construction. The choices the village has made will determine the guidelines for the plans. The main points are noted below.
- Parking
A parking study revealed that the street has enough space for four additional cars. Residents feel that a maximum of three additional cars should be enough. We will incorporate a maximum of three cars into the assignment for the developer. - The row of trees
The poplars at the side of the school will die in a few years. During the meeting, it was proposed that the trees should already be removed, provided this would be permitted by an ecological assessment. The residents agreed with this. The trees will be replaced with new greenery. - Target groups and types of residences
The residents indicated that building houses for young people and first-time buyers was important to them. Seniors remain another important target group. That is why we will focus on starter homes that could later be turned into lifetime homes, for example by adding an annexe. This will allow us to build houses for both first-time buyers and elderly people. - Number of houses
For now, we will continue based on a maximum of 6 houses for this location. It was noted that 6 houses does not seem like much. If the sale goes well, we will look with residents to see if more houses could be added in another location as well.
What next?
We are currently selecting a developer who will design, build and sell the houses. We will determine the conditions based on the wishes stipulated. As soon as the first draft plan is ready, we will consider it together with the village.
Planning
In spring, we will hold a gathering to discuss the developer’s plans. Residents will receive an official invitation. The next gathering will be in April 2026.
