ELENA – European Local ENergy Assistance
ELENA is a European project that is helping the municipality become sustainable more quickly. Residents receive support to make their homes energy efficient. The local authority is working on joint heating systems for districts. This will save energy and make the city more sustainable and a more pleasant place to live.
The project
The local authority is working to make homes more energy efficient in Leeuwarden Oost. To this end, the local authority receives a grant from the European Investment Bank through the ELENA programme. The goal of ELENA is to help cities carry out their plans for the energy transition faster and more effectively.
Approach
- deployment of energy coaches who give residents personalised advice on making their homes more sustainable;
- preparing for large-scale energy projects, such as installing district heating.
Through this approach, we are lowering the energy bill together and are preparing Leeuwarden and its surroundings for a sustainable future.
Project period
1 January 2026–1 January 2029.
Budget
Leeuwarden is receiving approximately €2 million to carry out the project.
