An opportunity for the orchard and a butterfly garden

The residents of Narderherne will pay for making the water navigable themselves. The local authority is investing in the Orchard and in a new butterfly garden.

The orchard needed to be refurbished and restored. The soil there was far too wet, which is bad for the trees. The local authority can use the soil from the water way to raise and rearrange the orchard. In the new situation, water management will be in order, biodiversity will be enhanced and there will be waterways with nature-friendly banks. The local authority will turn the adjacent land into a butterfly garden. Nothing will be done with the soil for now. This will create a green residential area for all residents of the village.

The local authority has prepared a design together with the promoters, direct residents and the orchard committee. The biodiversity working group and a delegation from the village also attended the working sessions. These designs are shown below:

What does the design cover?

Water and a natural bank

The existing ditch will be widened so that adjacent residents can access their homes with small boats. The bank between the waterway and the orchard will be given a nature-friendly layout. This is a bank with a gentle slope, which we are landscaping with various native plants. There will also be bird groves and some trees that naturally fit in there.

Layout of the orchard

We are raising the orchard so that the trees are higher and therefore drier. The number of trees remains the same as the original number of trees in the orchard. A few groups of shrubs and bushes that grow berries and nuts will also be planted.

Layout of the butterfly garden

In the butterfly garden, cultivated plants, shrubs and bushes are planted that attract bees and butterflies. We are shortening the existing path towards homes and the bend will be extended to be almost circular. On the north and west sides, we are planting some shrubs, native trees and bushes to restrict the views into the garden opposite.

Access

The existing road in the orchard will be shortened and removed on the south side. This is where the water crossing will be. The existing road will be extended on the north side to the Stringpaad, providing easy access to the homes.

There will also be a footpath through the orchard to make it possible to take a walk around the orchard, across road and path.

Walk-in meeting
