Quick to:

Sport and exercise policy framework

A kickoff memorandum has been prepared for the new sports and exercise policy framework. The initial memorandum is called ‘A new policy framework for sport and exercise’. The initial memorandum focuses on five topics. These are:

  1. From an early age, versatile in movement for a lifetime.
  2. Sports infrastructure, the basis for facilitating sports and exercise.
  3. Strengthening the sports climate and recreational sports.
  4. Vision on top sport (policy) in the municipality of Leeuwarden.
  5. Reducing health inequalities with sport as a means.

The Policy Framework for Sport and Exercise was based on a broad analysis of trends and needs. We also have also worked intensively with sports clubs, organisations and residents. We have gathered input through surveys, meetings and talks. More than 80 parties and many residents participated.

The draft policy framework was available for consultation until 19 February 2025. The policy framework, together with a response document, will be discussed by the city executive and council for decision-making by the end of March 2025. The first implementation document will be presented during National Sports Week from 19 to 28 September 2025.

National Sports Week 2025

Leeuwarden is proud to be one of the five host cities of National Sports Week 2025. From 19 to 28 September, Leeuwarden will be all about sports and exercise. As a host city, Leeuwarden shows that sport is for everyone: young and old, beginner or advanced. Leeuwarden is the first Frisian authority to receive this honour.

During National Sports Week, residents can take part in a variety of sports activities, workshops and demonstrations. The aim is to inspire everyone to get on the move and discover the joy of sport. The motto of BV Sport, the implementing organisation in Leeuwarden, says it all: ‘Blij van Sport’ (sport makes you happy). More information on National Sports Week will follow soon.
