Quick to:

Personal data

We have many tasks. We often need personal data to carry out these tasks.

Personal data concern information relating to you, such as your name, address, telephone number and place of residence. This also includes your registration number, IP address, citizen service number (BSN), financial data or information about your health.

The processing of personal data begins when you register with us and lasts until your death is registered. There are many different ways in which people get in contact with us. Whether you are a resident, an entrepreneur or a visitor.

Contact with the local authority

You can contact us in various ways. You can call or email us, fill out a contact form or drop by at the Town Hall. In some cases, we may require personal data. For example, this may be necessary to send you a leaflet, answer a question about a permit or call you back.

Social media

We are available via social media. This is not always secure. We have no influence over how social media handle your personal data. That is why we recommend sharing as little personal data via social media as possible.

Do you have any questions about a decision, permit or file? We will not answer such questions via social media. We want to be certain who you are. Leave your telephone number, and we will call you back. We will ask several questions to check that we are talking to the right person.

Key registers

We are required to record basic data in different registers. We call these key registers. Examples include the Key Register of Persons (BRP), the Key Register of Addresses and Buildings (BAG) and the Key Register of Valuation of Immovable Property (WOZ).

Taxes and levies

If you live or reside in the City of Leeuwarden, you must pay municipal taxes. This is stipulated by law. For example, this includes property tax, the waste levy, sewerage charges, a dog licence fee or tourist tax.

In some cases, you may be able to request remission or agree a payment arrangement with us. We will need personal data for this.

Care, education and youth

We will help you with care, education and youth. We offer help with keeping your home clean, transport and aids to help you keep living independently.

In addition, we offer help with parenting problems, youth care, transport for pupils and childcare. The school attendance officer checks whether children of compulsory school age actually go to school.

We need your personal data to carry out these tasks. That way, we can properly help you and make sure everything is done in accordance with the rules.

Work, benefits and debts

We will help you with financial matters. This could include, for example, help finding a job, applying for benefits or with debts. This help is provided for in various Acts.

We use your personal data in order to help you effectively. This allows us to see whether you are entitled to certain benefits. If you are in debt, we will be notified when you are no longer paying your rent, energy bill or health insurance.

Together, we will look for solutions and a way for you to get your financial matters back in order.

Permits and exemptions

You can apply to us for a permit or exemption. For example, this can be an environment and planning permit, a licence for catering or parking or an exemption for loading and unloading in the city.

The personal data we need to process an application will depend on the permit or exemption. That is laid down by law or in other regulations.

Law enforcement, supervision and security

We ensure a safe and pleasant living environment in the city and villages. We maintain supervision and take measures to keep the public space safe. We do so, among other things, by closing down drug premises and placing cameras to safeguard public order. We also help the police in investigating criminal offences and try to prevent crime.

We do this to ensure your safety and that of your environment. We will in some cases need your personal data for this, to ensure we can properly carry out our tasks.

Other situations

There are also other situations in which we process your personal data. For example, when you lodge a complaint or objection or when you receive a newsletter from the local authority. Or when we send you a survey or invite you to a gathering to inform you about a project or construction work in your neighbourhood.

What personal data do other government bodies use?

Visit the website of the Government. The Central Government website lists which organisations receive personal data from the Key Register of Persons.
