Be.SHARE
Be.SHARE is a European project that works on a sustainable system to heat and cool homes and office buildings, for example. It does so by reusing heat released during waste water treatment. This prevents energy from being wasted and makes cities cleaner and more sustainable.
About the project
In Brussels, a new energy system is being built that uses heat from waste water. Be.SHARE is a good fit for Leeuwarden’s plans to use heat from waste water to heat buildings. This project is subsidised by the European Union, via the European Urban Initiative (EUI).
How do we do this?
By bringing knowledge and experience from Brussels to Leeuwarden. That way, we can learn how to use heat, which would otherwise be lost, in homes and businesses in our city.
What does the project focus on?
- Reusing heat from waste water and other sustainable sources.
- Utilising sustainable energy in the city.
- Heating and cooling of different types of buildings (homes and office buildings).
- Collaboration between the local authority, businesses and residents.
What will we use Be.SHARE for?
Leeuwarden will use Be.SHARE to learn from Brussels. We will conduct small-scale studies and use the knowledge to prepare plans for our city. This will contribute to the sustainable heating of buildings in Leeuwarden.
Project period
The project will start in October 2025 and run until mid-2028.
Total project budget
Leeuwarden will receive a subsidy of €120,000 from the EU within the Be.SHARE project. The local authority will supplement this with another €30,000.
