Registering a foreign document
Have you had an important event abroad? Such as a birth, marriage, divorce, recognition or name change? If so, you must have this registered in the Key Register of Persons (BRP). Submit the original documents to the local authority. We will register them for you. Make an appointment.
What to take to the Town Hall
To register the documents, you will need to bring the following:
- A valid identity document.
- The original foreign document (with legalisation stamps).
If this applies to you:
- A copy of valid ID of your partner.
- A certified translation of the source document in Dutch, English, German or French.
Registration may take several weeks. Is further investigation needed? If so, the procedure will take longer.
Conditions for documents
Dutch, English, German or French
Is the document not in Dutch, English, German or French? Have the document translated by an official (sworn) translator in the Netherlands.
Legalisation agreements
Some documents require legalisation. This means we check that they are genuine. Whether this is necessary depends on the country where the document was produced. You will find the regulations for each country on the Rijksoverheid website.
Charges
Registering a document in the BRP is free of charge. Are additional documents needed? Or is an investigation needed? Fees may be payable for this. You will be notified by us first.
